What therapists should know about psychiatric meds
August 19, 2025
For many clinicians, clinical directors, and supervisors, children arriving at the CAC on psychotropic medications, or who may need these medications, can be a challenge. Children are prescribed, and benefit from, medications for depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other conditions. At Seamless 2025, clinicians will learn how these medications are used, the evidence base for their use, and the latest research on when doctors recommend starting and stopping these medications.
In less than a month, join Dr. Brooks Keeshin for just one of nine powerful online sessions all part of our fourth annual Seamless virtual conference. Dr. Keeshin is a child abuse pediatrician and child psychiatrist clinician researcher at University of Utah Health. In his practice, he provides clinical care to children and adolescents with histories of child abuse and other traumatic experiences at Primary Children’s Center for Safe and Healthy Families.
In this session, therapists, clinical supervisors, and CAC directors with a clinical background will learn about approaches to the psychiatric assessment of pediatric trauma. Then, Dr. Keeshin will survey the evidence that informs the use of psychiatric medication in the treatment of children with a histor of trauma. Finally, you’ll learn the latest medical guidance on prescribing and deprescribing medications for youth clients.
Dr. Keeshin is a Professor of Pediatrics and the Associate Vice Chair of Research in Child Mental Health at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute. He performs research and projects from SAMHSA, PCORI, NIMH and the State of Utah, all in the areas of trauma and suicide prevention. He also serves as the co-chair of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Child Maltreatment and Violence Committee and is a member of the AAP Council on Healthy Mental and Emotional Development Executive Committee.
